Ohio Crop Progress: Scattered rains change things up

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest Scattered rains helped some corn and soybean fields last week, according to Cheryl Turner, State Statistician, USDA NASS, Ohio Field Office. There were 5.7 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending August 18. Fields that received scattered rains last week were helped while fields not receiving any rain continued to suffer. Rainfall was sporadic and scattered even within counties with some areas of a county receiving an inch or more of rain while other areas in the same county received no precipitation. Overall, State level topsoil and subsoil conditions improved, though this improvement was not experienced evenly across Ohio. Crop conditions continued to deteriorate and remained in much poorer shape than 2018. Much of the corn in the State was pollinating or just past pollination and growers not receiving any precipitation, either naturally or through irrigation, were concerned about grain fill. The same concerns existed for soybeans as pod fill began in over half of Ohio fields. Growers continued to hope for a later than normal killing frost this fall. Conditions last week were generally favorable for fieldwork. Growers kept busy applying herbicides and fungicides, hauling manure, harvesting hay, tilling fields, and planting cover crops.Click here to read the full report.last_img read more

El Tri ramping up pursuit of USA prospect Gonzalez

first_imgUnited States El Tri ramping up pursuit of USMNT prospect Jonathan Gonzalez — and he’s listening Ives Galarcep @soccerbyives Last updated 1 year ago 23:21 1/8/18 FacebookTwitterRedditcopy Comments(3) Jonathan Gonzalez Christian Tabo Monterrey Atlas JULIO CESAR AGUILAR United States Mexico While U.S. Soccer has not confirmed a report from Mexico saying the midfielder has switched allegiances, he is now weighing his national team options Jonathan Gonzalez was once fully committed to representing the United States on the international level, and while he may not have changed his mind, he is clearly considering his other option.Gonzalez has been in contact with officials from the Mexican Football Federation, and has spoken to coach Juan Carlos Osorio about playing for El Tri, a source with knowledge of the discussions confirmed to Goal last Thursday.A report from Univision Deportes on Monday claims Gonzalez has decided to represent El Tri, and will file the one-time change of association with FIFA, which would permanently tie him to Mexico as an international. Editors’ Picks Lyon treble & England heartbreak: The full story behind Lucy Bronze’s dramatic 2019 Liverpool v Man City is now the league’s biggest rivalry and the bitterness is growing Megan Rapinoe: Born & brilliant in the U.S.A. A Liverpool legend in the making: Behind Virgil van Dijk’s remarkable rise to world’s best player However, as of last week, Gonzalez had not yet contacted U.S. Soccer to notify them of the switch — something that is required for him to complete the change in his international eligibility. Neither U.S. Soccer nor the Mexican federation have confirmed or denied at the report.Last week, reports surfaced that El Tri are considering calling up Gonzalez for the upcoming friendly against Bosnia & Herzegovina on Jan. 31 in San Antonio, Texas. ESPN Mexico reported Thursday that it is a good possibility Gonzalez will be called up for that friendly, but only if he files his one-time switch. Gonzalez was born in Northern California and has represented the U.S. in official competitions with the Under-17 and U-20 national teams. He is eligible to play for Mexico as long as he had Mexican citizenship prior to playing in an official U-17 competition with the U.S.If so, he must then file for a change of association. The process to have such a switch approved can take from weeks to months, and a source at U.S. Soccer confirmed to Goal that Gonzalez has yet to inform the federation of a decision to switch, which is a requirement in the process. The reality is there is no rush for Gonzalez to file a switch just to play in a January friendly. He would remain eligible for the U.S. and Mexico until he represented the U.S. national team in an official competition, and with the U.S. set to miss the World Cup, the next opportunity to cap-tie him won’t come until the CONCACAF League of Nations kicks off next fall.In theory, Gonzalez could be motivated by an opportunity to play in the 2018 World Cup with Mexico, but he would be considered a long shot to make that squad, especially playing in a midfield where El Tri have a multitude of options. The Mexican federation could be pushing hard to force him into a decision if it is believed he is unhappy with the U.S., which is a prevailing notion after Gonzalez revealed in a recent interview with Soccer America that nobody at U.S. Soccer contacted him about November’s friendly against Portugal.”I wasn’t called in, in November,” Gonzalez told Soccer America . “Personally, nobody came and talked to me and let me know about that friendly. I just wasn’t called in.”Goal reported in December that Gonzalez wasn’t happy about not being called in for the Portugal friendly. Gonzalez’s decision to publicly reveal that nobody at U.S. Soccer even called him to discuss where he stood — even though he was in the midst of an outstanding season in Liga MX — could be taken as a sign he is unhappy with the federation, as could his willingness to discuss a potential switch with Mexican officials.Gonzalez would need to have a change of association approved by FIFA to play in any match for Mexico, but El Tri could choose to have Gonzalez in camp for the Bosnia friendly as a participant or guest. U.S. Soccer invited Gonzalez to take part in its January training camp, but that request was denied by Monterrey, sources confirmed to Goal .last_img read more

With Mike Gundy, Culture Remains Vital

first_imgI have long been president of the “Mike Gundy is the most underrated outside-the-box thinker in college football coaching circles” fan club. Despite his misdirection — the mullet, the Big Daddy coffee mug, the Carhartt jackets — Gundy is bent on (and good at) building a sustainable culture of success in Stillwater. We talk about this a lot with Brad Underwood — deservingly so — because Brad Underwood talks about it a lot. He uses the word “culture” like my three-year-olds use the words “can we watch Daniel Tiger.” That is to say, liberally and without any inhibition. To see what it means to Mike Gundy, though. You have to look a little bit closer. You have to see that he was one of the first to experiment with short practices and no tackling and contorting an offense to fit his personnel instead of the other way around. His hairstyle belies the fact that he is lowkey impressive when it comes to innovation. And when it comes to the culture, he knows what he’s built doesn’t happen everywhere. It’s why OSU has won the 10th-most games in the last eight years with the 35th best recruiting classes.“We’re thrilled with it,” Gundy said of the culture this week. “I think the one thing that I’m most happy with is the culture that we’ve created here has been very positive and successful in a lot of different areas. We went through a transition with the APR that we’ve made the adjustments and have been very successful in that area.“We’re graduating players on four-year schedules, and we’re very competitive in a clean fashion and winning at a rate that is fairly impressive for the history at Oklahoma State.”Not just the history at Oklahoma State. The history of anyone. Here are the records of two Big 12 schools since 2005 when Gundy took over. The year Texas won it all.“All while doing that, our players and coaches like being here, and there’s an environment that has been created where we can have some sort of a life,” added Gundy.“I enjoy that part of it, but years ago I said that the one thing that would make me happy is to have a team that when we go out on Saturdays, we know if we take care of the ball and minimize big plays we have a chance to compete with or beat anybody we play.”OSU is 65-17 (79 percent) under Gundy when committing 0 or 1 turnovers in a single game.“That’s really all we can ask for,” said Gundy. “If we don’t play well or turn the ball over then we’re not going to win, but for the fans, I want them to be able to come to the games and say, ‘If we play well today, we can win.’ For a long time, it wasn’t that way. They would come to the stadium and there was that faithful 32,000 who would come to the stadium knowing there was probably a chance we’d get our butt kicked. That was encouraging and fulfilling for me personally.” While you’re here, we’d like you to consider subscribing to Pistols Firing and becoming a PFB+ member. Josh Henson Is More Than Just An ‘OSU Guy’

Mike Gundy had to replace two position coaches this offseason with the departure of running backs coach Marcus Arroyo to Oregon and the dismissal of O-line coach Greg Adkins. All that shuffling followed the best rushing output in four years for the Cowboys. Why the change? And how do Gundy and Co. keep their running game moving in an upward trajectory?Adkins shut the door on his future at OSU with recruiting, or a lack thereof. The Cowboys, who are still trying to recover from the empty cupboard left years ago by former O-line coach Joe Wickline, didn’t take a single high school recruit for the offensive line last season. That may be the most obvious difference in Josh Henson and his predecessor.Henson, who was hired as an offensive consultant by the Cowboys prior to last season is a nationally recognized recruiter. In his previous stint at OSU, he went from a graduate assistant to the tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator in two years.Les Miles took him to SEC country twelve years ago where he was selected as a one of the nation’s top 25 recruiters twice at LSU. Henson also coached Missouri’s offensive line before being promoted to offensive coordinator at Missouri. The former O-lineman and four-year letterman at OSU talked about where his group is during spring camp.“Things are going well,” said Henson. “The kids are working extremely hard and I like their passion and the way they’re into learning and getting better. We’ve got a lot of work to do. A lot of technique work. We’ve also got to work on finishing and getting our intensity up, but I like the way they’re working and that’s all you can ask.”The Tuttle native left OSU’s staff earlier this year to become a coach at Arizona State. That was until Adkins was let go. We can assume one of Mike Gundy’s first phone calls was to Henson.“I hated the timing of it just for the way things worked out,” Henson said “but this is my home and this is where I want to be. This is a dream come true for me to play on the offensive line here and to now be those guys’ coach. Now it’s about transition to getting those guys to work and making it the best that it can be.”Being home is great and “OSU guys” have been successful in Stillwater. But Henson’s greatest value will be producing results on the field and (hopefully) bringing some consistency to a position that’s seen a lot of turnover lately.last_img read more

The Path to Playing Time for Defensive Pokes in NFL

Because of our subscribers, we’ve been able to improve our work and provide the best OSU news and community anywhere online. Help us keep that up. Oklahoma State had two former players selected in last week’s NFL Draft and several more sign as undrafted free agents. Let’s take a quick look at each defensive player and what type of competition he’ll be facing when he arrives at training camp.Vincent Taylor – Miami DolphinsTaylor put together a dominant junior season in the wake of Emmanuel Ogbah’s own early departure for the NFL. But leading his team in sacks and tackles for loss and leading the nation in blocked kicks couldn’t quite get him out of the 6th round. Still, I think he lands in a nice spot in Miami.Who’s ahead of him?The Dolphins gave up the most yards in franchise history last season and were 30th against the run. Tackle was a real need for Miami after starter Jordan Phillips has not quite impressed. The selections of Vincent Taylor and Davon Godchaux from LSU a round earlier are probably meant to push Phillips, if not divvy up some of his reps beside Ndamukong Suh.ProjectionWith some hard work in training camp and if he picks up the system quickly, Taylor could push for that third option alongside Suh, if not then he will likely get reps as his backup. Suh is somebody Taylor has noted he’s always looked up to.Jordan Sterns – Kansas City ChiefsSterns finished his OSU career as the leading tackler under Mike Gundy, reaching triple digits in that department each of the last three seasons. He’s a hard hitter with good instincts who may only a puncher’s chance to succeed at the next level.Who’s ahead of him?Headlining the Chiefs’ strong safety spot is five-time Pro Bowler, Eric Berry who shares the backfield with Rob Parker, Eric Murray and Daniel Sorenson. Sterns will be initially competing directly with the Chiefs’ 6th round pick, USC’s Leon McQuay III.ProjectionAfter watching him play for four years, I don’t know how you could bet against him. Sterns should make a roster and I think he will have a decent-to-good NFL career.Ashton Lampkin – Kansas City ChiefsLampkin spent a good part of his time in Stillwater fighting injury. After playing in every game as a true freshman and sophomore, Lampkin missed all but four games in 2014. He spent most of 2015 dinged up as well but still found his way onto the field. Can he finally stay healthy long enough to give himself a shot?Who’s ahead of him?The Chiefs roster has a lot of questions at cornerback. With such a deep corner group in this draft, many saw them taking at least one cover man. But they stood pat, spending the brunt of their resources on the offensive side of the ball. For Lampkin, he will need to fight for scraps in a group that includes Marcus Peters, Phillip Gaines, Steven Nelson, DJ White and Terrance Mitchell.ProjectionLampkin has good size for an NFL corner but will have to show he can be technically sound as well as physical to stick on a 53-man roster.Lenzy Pipkins – Green Bay PackersPipkins was another in a long line of grad transfers to add depth to the Cowboys’ defense and gain a better shot at the NFL. He was a welcome cover man at a time of need for Oklahoma State.Who’s ahead of him?Cornerback is a need Green Bay addressed with their No. 1 pick (first pick of the 2nd round) in Washington’s Kevin King. Their very next selection was safety Josh Jones from N.C. State. With Pipkins, they add another body to throw into he mix to try to bolster a secondary that got absolutely lit up last year. Mike McCarthy is still having nightmares of Julio Jones in the Georgia Dome from the NFC Championship game.ProjectionPipkins will have the opportunity as the Packers featured former undrafted free agent Ladarius Gunter extensively at the corner last year. The need at the position could give Pipkins a leg up.last_img read more

Brutal opening loss a wake-up call for Atlanta United

first_imgAtlanta United Brutal opening loss a wake-up call for Atlanta United Ives Galarcep @soccerbyives Last updated 1 year ago 13:58 4/3/2018 FacebookTwitterRedditcopy Comments(0) Miguel Almiron Atlanta United MLS Troy Taormina Atlanta United Houston Dynamo v Atlanta United Houston Dynamo MLS Lofty preseason expectations were deflated over the course of 90 ugly minutes as Atlanta’s flaws were exposed by an inspired Houston Dynamo team The Atlanta United hype train didn’t take very long to derail, and as much as Saturday’s 4-0 loss to the Houston Dynamo is just one match, it managed to shine a spotlight on the remaining flaws in the second-year team in a brutal run of 45 minutes. The second-year MLS club came into 2018 with high expectations after a headline-grabbing winter spent adding some big attacking weapons, but the Dynamo exposed some clear areas for concern in Atlanta’s vulnerable defense and the club’s lack of depth.Led by the ever-dangerous Alberth Elis, Houston repeatedly forced Atlanta United into mistakes and it brought about a match to forget for defender Leandro Gonzalez Pirez. Captain Michael Parkhurst didn’t start the opener and is still working his way back to full strength after a preseason injury, and his absence was glaring during a first half where the Five Stripes simply looked lost defensively. Article continues below Editors’ Picks Williams case shows Solskjaer isn’t holding Man Utd’s youngsters back – he’s protecting them Goalkeeper crisis! Walker to the rescue but City sweating on Ederson injury ahead of Liverpool clash Out of his depth! Emery on borrowed time after another abysmal Arsenal display Diving, tactical fouls & the emerging war of words between Guardiola & Klopp “Houston has really fast and destabilizing people up front,” Atlanta United coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino said after the match. “We struggled in stopping Elis when he had the space; and we committed a lot of individual errors where we basically invited our opponent to finish the game.”Gonzalez Pirez endured a particularly rough day. Without Parkhurst on the field to help direct him, Gonzalez Pirez saw his slow reactions punished by Houston’s speed, with Elis abusing him on the opening goal. He was far from alone in being to blame for Houston’s four-goal barrage, but if Gonzalez Pirez came into the season overconfident after finishing last season in top form, Houston promptly stuck a pin in that ego.It wasn’t just the back four though. Atlanta’s midfield didn’t provide enough support for the defense, which probably didn’t come as a complete surprise. The defensive midfield role was the big cause for concern heading into the season after Carlos Carmona’s departure. Jeff Larentowicz was expected to try and fill the void, while Darlington Nagbe’s ability to keep possession was also supposed to help take pressure off the defense.Neither worked out. Nagbe’s debut was lackluster. He didn’t keep the ball and his defensive contributions were inadequate, which is likely what led to him being replaced in the 61st minute. Chris McCann was active, if ineffective in defensive midfield, while Larentowicz looked slow playing at center back.”I think that what cost us was the defensive part, which is something you have to care about in soccer,” Martino said. “It looks like we struggled with defending the ball and we struggled on the 1-v-1 defensively. Offensively, we probably created as many scoring situations as Houston did, but our defense didn’t work as well – and when I talk about our defense, I mean the whole team.”Leandro Gonzalez Pirez Atlanta United MLSBy the time Parkhurst came in to replace an injured Gonzalez Pirez in the 41st minute, the damage was already done to the tune of four unanswered goals and even more scoring chances for the Dynamo. Atlanta United was left with an ugly loss that exposed some flaws that weren’t exactly secrets. As much attention as the acquisitions of Ezequiel Barco and Nagbe received in the offseason, it wasn’t as if the glaring needs for a defensive midfield and some depth at center back weren’t also obvious to see as the new season approached..@alberthelis17 ➡️ @andrewwengerThe goal that put the host ahead early. #HOUvATL https://t.co/3rdzm3E93M— Major League Soccer (@MLS) March 3, 2018How did Atlanta wind up with such a clear roster flaw? It’s down to Carmona’s departure, which Atlanta United didn’t account for in its winter plans. The Chilean midfielder was outstanding for Atlanta last season, and his hard work in midfield was underrated and invaluable. Once he forced a move to Colo Colo, Atlanta was left with a clear void to address. It was believed Larentowicz and Nagbe could help pick up the slack in central midfield, but Larentowicz was deployed at the back, where he struggled, and Nagbe failed to match the work rate of former Atlanta United midfielder Yamil Asad, let alone Carmona’s defensive work.It isn’t time to go into panic mode in Atlanta just yet. Parkhurst looked sharp once he entered the match, and his return to the starting lineup should help Gonzalez Pirez a lot — assuming his injury doesn’t force him to miss playing time. Larentowicz should help the central midfield, and Nagbe should bounce back to deliver more of the quality expected of him.All that being said, the rest of the league will have seen what Houston was able to do, and will certainly look to attack the same flaws the Dynamo’s feasted on. Atlanta United’s technical staff also saw clear evidence that waiting until the summer to address the team’s glaring roster needs isn’t really an option. Not when the team is just one injury away from being so glaringly exposed.last_img read more

Sometimes it is very difficult to find a weakness in this team,” the Blues boss said, adding: “Manchester City has the possibility to spend a lot of money. When you link this situation – a good manager, much money to spend in the transfer market, the same ambition – this is the final result.”The Italian coach finds himself under increasing pressure at Chelsea, but he could serve his detractors a reminder of his quality by getting one over on Guardiola’s seemingly invulnerable team.A win would keep them within touching distance of the top four, but failure to pick up three points will be a blow to their hopes of ensuring Champions League football next season.Notably, however, Conte’s men have had a longer period of rest than their hosts, having not played since February 25, and they will be eager to take advantage.
